Repairing the Destroyer's DAMA Systems
The W's of the Story.
01
Nathan traveled aboard a destroyer from Singapore to Thailand to work on its communications equipment. He troubleshot and repaired both MD-1324 DAMA systems, restoring the ship's primary UHF communications capability. The work occurred roughly two weeks before September 11, reinforcing a later lesson that the full importance of technical readiness is not always visible when the work is performed.
02
While traveling aboard a destroyer from Singapore to Thailand, Nathan was asked to support communications equipment outside his assigned submarine. Both of the ship’s MD-1324 DAMA systems required repair.
03
The destroyer’s primary UHF communications capability depended on two unavailable systems. Nathan needed to apply his expertise in a different shipboard environment and restore both units during the available support window.
04
Nathan assessed the two DAMA systems, methodically isolated their faults, completed the necessary repairs, and verified that both systems were operational before the ship continued its mission.
05
Technical expertise creates value beyond organizational boundaries when it is shared where the mission needs it. Readiness work should be completed with urgency and care even when no one can yet predict the event that will make the capability essential.
