Leading Three Communications Watch Sections
The W's of the Story.
01
As Communications Division Chief and division supervisor aboard USS GEORGIA, Nathan directly led twelve Sailors organized into three watch sections—the three shifts that provided twenty-four-hour coverage of communications watch stations. He was responsible for communications readiness, technical training, maintenance, watch-team development, and personnel growth. His performance was recognized when he was ranked first among thirteen Chief Petty Officers.
02
Aboard USS GEORGIA, Nathan served as Communications Division Chief and division supervisor for twelve Sailors organized into three watch sections that maintained continuous communications coverage.
03
The division had to sustain twenty-four-hour watch-station coverage while also maintaining equipment, building technical proficiency, developing watch teams, and supporting the professional growth of each Sailor.
04
Nathan aligned the three watch sections around clear readiness standards, coordinated training and maintenance, developed individual and team capability, and maintained oversight across shifts so operational performance did not depend on his direct presence at every watch station.
05
Operational leadership requires building a system in which people, training, maintenance, standards, and trust reinforce one another across every shift. Readiness is durable when teams can perform consistently without depending on a single leader’s constant presence.
