Accountability and Mentorship from the Submarine Group 9 COMSEC Manager

The W's of the Story.

During a difficult period in Nathan's development as a COMSEC leader, the Submarine Group 9 COMSEC Manager held him accountable for mistakes while continuing to teach, guide, and trust him with meaningful responsibility. Nathan came to understand that accountability is not abandonment. Done well, it protects standards while helping a person become capable of meeting them.

During Nathan’s USS GEORGIA tour, a difficult period of COMSEC accountability placed him under the guidance of the Submarine Group 9 COMSEC Manager.

Nathan needed to face the consequences of mistakes and strengthen his performance without losing the opportunity to learn, rebuild trust, and grow into the responsibilities expected of a COMSEC leader.

The COMSEC Manager held Nathan accountable while continuing to teach, guide, and entrust him with meaningful responsibility. Nathan accepted the correction and learned within a relationship that protected standards without treating development as finished.

Accountability is not abandonment. Done well, it protects standards while preserving a path for growth, restored trust, and greater responsibility.
