Turning COMSEC Inspection into Mentorship

The W's of the Story.

01

Communications Security Material includes the shared and asymmetric encryption-algorithm materials used to secure radio and network communications. Years of managing this material taught Nathan that an inspection can either create fear or build capability. At COMSUBRON 19, he worked with developing managers by explaining the purpose behind requirements, identifying root causes of deficiencies, and helping them establish sustainable practices. The approach maintained accountability while treating inspection as a teaching opportunity, reflecting the mentorship he had once received during his own difficult learning experiences.

02

From 2021 through 2024 at COMSUBRON 19, Nathan conducted and supported Communications Security Material inspections for operational accounts managed by personnel with varying levels of experience.

03

An inspection had to protect strict security and accountability requirements without reducing the process to fault-finding. If managers understood only what was wrong, but not why it mattered or how to prevent recurrence, the account could pass through correction without gaining durable capability.

04

Nathan explained the purpose behind requirements, worked with managers to identify root causes instead of isolated symptoms, and helped them establish sustainable practices. He paired clear accountability with practical coaching so each inspection also became a development opportunity.

05

Accountability and mentorship are not competing responsibilities. Standards become more durable when leaders enforce them clearly, explain their purpose, and help people build the judgment and practices needed to meet them without constant external correction.
